Sacred Heart Dog Tag and American Flag Cross
“In the Sacred Heart, every treasure of wisdom and knowledge is hidden. In that divine heart beats God’s infinite love for everyone and for each of us as individuals.” -St. John Paul II
Once blessed, the Sacred Heart Dog Tag fulfills the requirements of a scapular medal as it bears the image of Our Redeemer Jesus Christ showing His Sacred Heart on the front and the Blessed Virgin Mary on the back.
What is a scapular medal?
A scapular medal is a small sacramental made of metal that bears the image of Jesus Christ showing His Sacred Heart on one side, and an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the other. In 1910, Pope Pius X declared that once enrolled in a scapular approved by the Holy See (except those proper to Third Orders), a person may substitute a small metal scapular instead of the traditional cloth scapular as a sign of the devotion. Through observance of the laws promulgated for each scapular, a person can gain the spiritual favors (except the Sabbatine Privilege of Our Lady of Mount Carmel) and privileges associated with each scapular. (Holy Office, Rome, December 16, 1910).
What are the requirements for a scapular medal?
- The wearer must be validly enrolled in the scapular which the scapular medal will represent, before making the substitution.
- The scapular medal must be a single medal made of metal.
- The scapular medal must bear the image of Our Most Holy Redeemer, Jesus Christ showing His Sacred Heart on one side and an image of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary on the back.
- The scapular medal must be blessed with a separate blessing for each of the scapulars a person has been enrolled in, which they desire it to replace.
- The scapular medal may be blessed with a single sign of the cross by a priest who possesses the faculty of blessing the particular scapular. (Holy Office, Rome, December 16, 1910).
Why wear a scapular medal?
Each of the scapulars approved for use in the Church have particular spiritual benefits when used with faith and devotion. Scapulars are sacramentals instituted by the Church which give grace “ex opere operantis” – by the virtue of their ecclesiastical approval and the dispositions with which they are used (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1992, para. 1667).
What is the history of the scapular?
Scapulars began in the Middle Ages as long narrow pieces of cloth were worn over clothing as a work garment. These scapulars eventually became part of religious habits bearing religious significance, and later, smaller forms of the cloth scapulars were used by the laity as a sign of devotion in association with particular religious orders. The wearer is invested in a scapular by a religious authority, and the scapular is to be worn according to specific instructions. These small scapulars are traditionally formed from two pieces of cloth and connected with strings so that it may be worn around one’s neck. There are several small scapulars that have been approved for use in the Universal Church (Ball, 1991).
Sacred Heart Dog Tag - A Scapular Medal
The Sacred Heart Dog Tag is a form of Scapular Medal as it bears the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the front, and the Blessed Virgin Mary on the back. Since valid enrollment in the (cloth) scapular must be made before substituting a scapular medal, we include a traditional brown cloth scapular to use for investiture, along with a "Brown Scapular Blessing" card with the Sacred Heart Dog Tag and all scapular medals.
