What is Spiritual Warfare?
“The way of perfection passes by way of the Cross. There is no holiness without renunciation and spiritual battle.” (CCC, 2015)
Spiritual Warfare in Scripture and Tradition
The Catechism of the Catholic Church and Sacred Scripture speak of the “spiritual warfare” that is part of the Christian life. But what is spiritual warfare? St. Paul teaches that “we are not contending against flesh and blood” but against “principalities and powers” (Eph. 6:12). Though Christ defeated the devil and his demons through His death and resurrection, the Church must still battle against evil spirits who remain a dangerous enemy until Christ comes again to destroy them at the end of time (1 Cor. 15:24-25; Rev. 20:10). Man is cleansed of all sin in the Sacrament of Baptism, but he must still combat concupiscence (inclination to sin) throughout his earthly life (CCC, 978-979). These battles against Satan (and his demons) and against man’s own sinful tendencies, is what is meant by spiritual warfare.
Put on the Armor of God
Christians embark on this battle full of hope, knowing they have many spiritual weapons at their disposal, especially the “armor of God” - the grace given by God to protect them in times of temptation, as well as preaching, prayer, Sacred Scripture and the Sacraments (2 Cor. 10:3-4; Eph. 6:10-17). Christ is all-powerful, and he desires that in this spiritual battle, men put their trust in Him and his infinite power and love, not relying on their human abilities alone, for apart from Him they can do nothing (Jn. 15:5).
The Saints and Spiritual Warfare
Throughout history, the saints fought spiritual battles as they journeyed toward their final reward of Heaven. The saints, the Church Triumphant, continue to aid the Church Militant in her daily battles both through their example and intercession. The lives of the saints – from St. Joseph to St. Michael to St. Padre Pio and countless others - give a blueprint and battle plan for how to take up spiritual arms against the wiles of Satan and sin, especially through the sacraments, prayer and cooperating with the grace of God. The saints in heaven pray to God for those on earth, that they may fight valiantly for the good and win.
