The Miraculous Medal

A sign of Our Lady’s care and powerful intercession

Also called the Medal of the Immaculate Conception, the Miraculous Medal comes from apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to St. Catherine Labouré in Paris (1830). Worn with faith, it’s a daily reminder of Mary’s prayerful protection and her desire to bring us to Jesus.

Meaning & Origins

  • 1830 Apparitions: Our Lady asked that a medal be struck and promised “great graces” to those who wear it with trust.
  • Name “Miraculous”: Early favors reported by the faithful quickly gave the medal its popular title.
  • Purpose: A simple way to entrust ourselves to Mary’s intercession and live the mystery of the Immaculate Conception.

Symbols & Inscriptions (Front & Back)

Front of the Medal
  • Mary standing on the globe: Christ’s victory shared through Mary, Mother of the Church.
  • Serpent under her feet: Triumph over sin and Satan (cf. Gen 3:15).
  • Rays from her hands: Graces God gives through her intercession.
  • Inscription: “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”
Back of the Medal
  • Large “M” and Cross: Mary at the foot of the Cross—her union with Jesus’ saving work.
  • Two Hearts: The Sacred Heart of Jesus (crowned with thorns) and the Immaculate Heart of Mary (pierced).
  • Twelve Stars: Church/apostles, echoing Rev 12:1.

How to Use the Miraculous Medal

  1. Have it blessed by a priest: A simple blessing for sacramentals is sufficient.
  2. Wear or carry daily: On a chain, in a pocket, or attached to your rosary.
  3. Pray the inscription often: “O Mary, conceived without sin…”—especially in moments of need.
  4. Live the grace: Unite the medal to Confession, Holy Communion, and daily prayer.

Note: Sacramentals don’t work by magic; they dispose us to receive the graces God offers.

Prayers

Invocation of the Miraculous Medal

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

Mother Mary, I place myself under your protection. Lead me to Jesus, strengthen my faith, and help me say “yes” to God each day. Amen.

Suggested Novena (simple pattern)

For nine days: Pray the Invocation above 3×, add your intention, and conclude with one Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be.

Devotion Tips

  • Kiss the medal briefly when beginning prayer, as a child greeting a mother.
  • Give blessed medals to family and friends who are open—pair with a simple card that explains the symbols.
  • Choose a daily moment (commute, lunch, bedtime) to pray the Invocation slowly and intentionally.
