My hero is my oldest Brother, Raymond Porzio, USNR. He joined the Navy in honor of our father (1923-2001) who as a Seabee landed on 14 Pacific Islands in WWII. Ray, a very scientific minded fellow started as NROTC at University of Rochester in 1966, upon commissioning 1970 became a missile officer on a the USS Columbus, missile carrying cruiser. He often served as a Eucharistic minister and spiritual leader for the day/week. He visited many monasteries while on shore leave so he continued to enrich his spiritual life.
After serving he worked innumerable hours in highly classified national defense doing research and development for our country’s quietest and strongest systems to locate enemy underwater and surface vessels. Retired he is now minister to the Franciscans Saint Mary Cope Fraternity in Syracuse NY. He shares his harvest, fish, game and sugar shack syrup with many less fortunate. Ray and wife Leslie have two wonderful children, one being Matt, USNA Petty Officer, former Medical Corpsman (Iraq & Afghanistan) and has motivated his niece who currently is a Navy contract at Texas A&M.
Since a young age Ray has exemplified strong principles, Love of family, God and Country. This relic would be befitting of this good Navy man, so patriotic and supportive of his countrymen; of a man who so often is a spiritual rock to those in need, on land, air or sea. Respectfully submitted by his sister, Lynette Miller Goshen, CT
