Did you know patriotism is a virtue?
In the Summa Theologica, St. Thomas Aquinas explains patriotism is a form of piety and type of justice.
He explains that we become indebted to others in various ways, according to the benefits received from them.
- First, we are indebted to God, as He is the first principle of being and government. He holds the first place and we owe him worship.
- Second, after God, we are indebted to our parents and our country, as they are also principles of our being, who have given us birth and nourishment.
As it belongs to religion to worship God in the first place, it belongs to piety, in the second place, to honor our parents and country. (S.T. II-II Q 101 A1)
